Tuscany
Camera Etrusca is based in Orvieto - in Umbria, but this area, which embraces three regions, which the ancient Romans knew as Etruria and nowadays is called Tuscia (from which stems the name Tuscany). So in effect on a workshop you will not only see the delights of Tuscany but Umbria and the lesser known Latium as well.
The melancholy cypress tree is one of the leitmotivs of Tuscany. Here in San Quirico d’Orcia there’s a whole clump of them - almost certainly planted after the First World War as a memorial - each tree represents a fallen soldier.
Pitigliano in Tuscany (left & below) is one of our favourite places. A hilltop town built entirely of Tufa - the ochre coloured volcanic stone used all over Tuscia - it glows in the evening light. The photo left shows the Jewish cemetery in Pitigliano - unusual to see funerary monuments, but this just shows how integrated the community was by the 19th century.
