Populonia Pines

A pine forest on the Tyrrhenian coast in the gulf of Moratti near Piombino opposite the Isle of Elba. Populonia was one of the first Etruscan colonies in Italy in about 900 BC; the Etruscans (or the Tyrrhenians as the Greeks called them) came for the iron of Elba which they smelted in furnaces in the Gulf of Moratti - this beautiful spot was the Sheffield or Pittsburgh of the ancient world!
