A portrait done with a 5x7” plate camera in the style of the Alinari brothers of 19th century Florence as the client wished to give his business a pedigree. I used a friend of mine as a model because I thought he had just the right ‘Geppetto’ (Pinocchio’s dad) sort of face. When the campaign was published several people remarked on the likeness of the artisan to a noted gynaecologist - which he was of course.
All the upholsterer’s paraphernalia was transported into an old condemned building which had the coat of arms to give aristocratic credibility. There was a hole in the roof just above Geppetto’s head and rain was pouring in so an assistant held an umbrella over his head until the last second. The things one had to do before the Photoshop age.
